Turning Sustainability Data Collection Into a Scalable Reporting Platform

Göteborgsvarvet needed a faster, easier, and more reliable way to collect CO2-related data across one of the world’s largest half marathon events. Instead of relying on complex Excel files, manual follow-ups, and scattered submissions, K.B built a centralized sustainability reporting platform that made it easier for internal teams, suppliers, sponsors, and partners to submit the data needed for CO2 calculations. The result was a simpler reporting process, lower administrative workload, better visibility, and a reusable foundation for future events.

The Challenge

Göteborgsvarvet wanted to systematically collect sustainability data for CO2 reporting across its event ecosystem. The existing process was built around Excel files. These files contained the necessary reporting structure and calculation model, but they were not ideal for collecting information from a large number of stakeholders. Internal staff, event personnel, suppliers, sponsors, partners, and collaborators all needed to provide data across areas such as travel, food, materials, logistics, and other event-related emissions. This created several operational challenges: Contributors had to work with complex Excel files Data was submitted through email and other manual channels Formats varied between submissions Missing information was difficult to track The sustainability team had limited visibility over reporting progress Data had to be manually reviewed, validated, and consolidated before reporting For a large event with many stakeholders, this made the process difficult to scale.

Our Approach

K.B built a custom web-based CO2 data collection platform designed around simplicity, speed, and adoption. The goal was not to replace Göteborgsvarvet’s existing CO2 calculation logic. Instead, the project focused on modernizing the data collection layer while keeping the existing Excel-based reporting methodology intact. The solution included: A public submission portal for internal and external contributors No account creation required for submitters Organization selection through a dropdown Structured forms for categories such as travel, food, materials, and other emissions Centralized storage of all submitted data An admin dashboard for Göteborgsvarvet Partner and submission tracking Manual record creation, editing, and deletion Filtering and reporting overview Excel export functionality aligned with the existing CO2 model The platform was designed to work across mobile and desktop, making it easier for contributors to submit data before, during, and after the event. K.B also used an AI-assisted delivery workflow to accelerate the project. Initial concepts and dashboard layouts were created quickly, validated with the client, and then developed into a working application. The final system was moved into GitHub and deployed in a controlled production environment to maintain ownership, flexibility, and long-term maintainability.
